Losing Hope: Bob Hope Airport Rebranding as Hollywood Burbank Airport

“Bob Hope isn’t doing it” – Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority Commissioner Don Brown

Bob Hope Airport (KBUR) in Burbank, Calif., will be rebranded Hollywood Burbank Airport, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Concerned with improving the airport's profile among the masses and increasing business at the airport, the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority voted to accept a branding firm's recommendation in early May. Bob Hope Airport will remain the airport name for legal purposes.

The L.A. Times story quotes commissioner Don Brown saying, “We’ve been told by our travel agencies here and been told by the airlines that we’ve got to do something, and the name Bob Hope just doesn’t identify with this airport.”

When Million Air Burbank informed us of the change, we started wondering: What other names connected to Hollywood circa 2016 were in the running for the rebranding project?

We might have recommended:

  • Jennifer Lawrence Airport to appeal to younger travelers
  • Captain America Airport to maintain Bob Hope's connection to American military personnel
  • Prince Memorial Airport because R.I.P. Prince

Besides learning about Bob Hope Airport, we have also learned that The London Heliport will now be called NetJets London Heliport as part of a partnership between NetJets Europe and the heliport.

Your turn: Put on your airport branding consultant hat. What would you rebrand Bob Hope Airport? And what other airports are due for a rebranding?
