U.S. CBP Wants to Increase Use of Preclearance Program at Shannon International Airport (EINN)

U.S. Customs and Border Protection staff at Shannon International Airport in Ireland wants to improve the numbers of companies preclearing U.S. Customs there, a CBP representative said at the International Operators Conference in Atlanta this week.

Speaking to attendees on Wednesday, Eric Rodriguez, program manager, general aviation, for CBP conducted an unscientific interactive poll about the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Preclearance program. Eleven percent of attendees responding said their company had precleared Customs through at least one CBP preclearance port outside of the United States in 2016.

Rodriguez emphasized the value of the preclearance points at Shannon International Airport in Ireland and in Aruba. CBP is considering mobile technology and different methods of removing baggage from aircraft to make the preclearance process more efficient and more reliable in Shannon, he said.

The clearance information available to subscribers on ACUKWIK.com or in the AC-U-KWIK Managers' World Edition provides an overview of the process:

EINN/Shannon has approval to preclear commercial, airline and corporate flights to the United States. Once cleared of all formalities, currently a 90-minute process, the flight is regarded as a domestic U.S. flight and may land at any of the 232 currently approved destinations within the U.S. and approved to dispose of the inbound flight's garbage. Note that full TSA guidelines must be observed — passengers' personal carry-ons must not deviate from standard airline passengers: No liquids, sharp items and so forth. Cargo and military flights cannot be processed.
