NBAA Welcomes New Air Traffic Procedure at Orlando Executive Airport

Airport Will Host Static Aircraft Display for Association’s 2012 Convention

A new procedure at Orlando Executive Airport (ORL) in Florida – host facility for the Static Display of Aircraft at the National Business Aviation Association's (NBAA's) upcoming 65th Annual Meeting & Convention (NBAA2012) – will allow more efficient operations year-round at ORL by enabling controllers to position aircraft on the runway prior to takeoff clearance.

Effective July 1, controllers at the central Florida airport will be able to issue “line up and wait” (LUAW) instructions to departing traffic.

“This can only improve the already outstanding throughput at our airport, which has always been the benchmark for other NBAA host airports to emulate,” said Bob Showalter, chairman of Showalter Flying Services.

Implemented in September 2010, LUAW supplanted the previous “taxi into position and hold” (TIPH) instruction in the United States. The change brought FAA terminology into compliance with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and answered a long-standing National Transportation Safety Board recommendation.

LUAW allows for more efficient handling of both departing and arriving traffic to an active runway. Unlike the prior TIPH instruction, however, “line up and wait” is only approved for use via special approval from the FAA, at a handful of towered airports with a documented operational need.

“NBAA thanks the staff at Orlando Executive for making this change, which not only will assist with operations during our upcoming Convention, but also will benefit the airport and pilots throughout the year,” said Bob Lamond, NBAA director, air traffic services and infrastructure.

More than 25,000 business aviation professionals are expected to attend NBAA2012, to be held Oct. 30 to Nov. 1, 2012, in Orlando. NBAA2012 will feature exhibits at the Orange County Convention Center, an on-site outdoor Static Display of Aircraft directly adjacent to the Orange County Convention Center and a Static Display of Aircraft on Orlando Executive Airport. Attendees also will benefit from over 100 education sessions and learn about all that is new in the world of business aviation.
